Indian IT firms fuel Qantas flight

Satyam, TCS win multi-million deals with Qantas to provide a range of IT application, transformation and maintenance services
HYDERABAD/SYDNEY: Satyam Computer Services Ltd and Tata Consultancy Services today announced in separate statements that they have won multi-million seven-year contracts with Qantas.

The agreement between Satyam and Qantas covers application development and maintenance services for over 150 applications across a wide portfolio of technologies.

This follows the recent Oracle e-Business suite contract announced in August between Qantas and Satyam for the implemented elements of Qantas’ eBusiness systems. The transition of the IT support and service delivery of these applications to Satyam is already underway, the Satyam statement said.

The deal follows an extensive, 12-month review by Qantas of its information technology applications development, support and maintenance functions.

Commenting on this win, Rama Raju, co-founder and chief executive officer of Satyam, said, “We are very proud to partner with Qantas, Australia’s leading airline as one of their global service providers and we look forward to leveraging our global expertise towards achieving Qantas goals and objectives.”

TCS’ seven-year engagement with Qantas with an expected value of around AUD120 million (US$90 million) is to provide a range of IT application, transformation and maintenance services.

Under the contract, TCS will assume full responsibility for more than 75 per cent of the total scope of Qantas' (AST) program. TCS will provide support and maintenance to all of Qantas' key IT applications for airport operations and commercial systems TCS will be the lead partner for the transition phase of the entire Qantas AST program, overseeing activities of many of Qantas' internal and external groups involved in IT systems support and maintenance.

"The Qantas engagement is a significant milestone for TCS' airline business and is the result of our extensive investments in building domain expertise that has helped create innovative solutions for companies," said S Ramadorai, CEO and managing director. "We believe technology has a strong role to play in enabling the travel and hospitality sector companies to retain customers and build new business models," he added.

The TCS statement issued from Sydney said that Qantas will benefit from access to TCS' new Innovation Lab for Travel and Hospitality, located in Chennai. The Lab incubates, develops and pilots new solutions for emerging technologies such as RFID, wireless and digital asset management.

CSS Software to hire 500 in 12 months

CSS Software India, the Indian IT services subsidiary of the US headquartered Cybernet Software Systems (CSS), plans to hire over 500 professionals over the next 12 months to take its headcount to 650 from the existing 150 in the country.

As a part of this expansion, it has opened an office in Hyderabad.

The company is aggressively targeting the Andhra Pradesh ERP market. It is focusing on small and medium manufacturing and engineering companies in this regard.

“With our aggressive expansion into Andhra Pradesh, we are confident of establishing a strong footprint in the IT services market and expect to double our customer base over the next 6-12 months,” the company’s business head, Mani Sam, said in a press release here on Tuesday.

CSS Software currently has over 10 customers in India.

TCS buys Aussie consultancy firm

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has acquired Australian consultancy firm TCS Management (TCSM) for A$1.7 million and performance payments of A$15 million over five years.

TCSM (formerly Total Communications Solutions), a privately owned company, recorded a turnover of A$5.5 million during the financial year ended June 30, 2006.

TCS has appointed Neville Roach, chairman of FNS (a Tata group company), chairman of TCSM. The company would retain key personnel, including the current management team of TCSM, most of whom, have over 15 years of industry experience, TCS said in a release here today.

The Indian software major, in 2005, acquired FNS – a Sydney-based software solutions company for – $26 million.

Girija Pande, TCS’ Asia-Pacific head, said, “The acquisition of TCSM is part of the strategy to substantially grow our Australian business and provide high-end business and IT consulting to our large Australian client base.”

“Local knowledge and domain consulting expertise brought in by TCSM will complement TCS’ global capabilities in consulting, IT services and BPO to provide greater value to Australian business,” he added.

TCSM specialises in business and technology transformation bringing in benefits like strategy conversion, programme alignment, portfolio balancing and navigation services.

It also implements core delivery management solutions for the larger banking clients.

The Australian company, set up in 1993, has clients such as ANZ Bank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank as well as investment banks Macquarie and Goldman Sachs JBWere.

TCS has been operating in Australia for over two decades and has over 500 consultants based in the country.

Its clientele there includes BHP, Woolworth, ANZ Bank, St George Bank, Alcoa, Rio Tinto and the state of Victoria.

Cricinfo Relocates Its Global HQ To Bangalore; Plans Acquisitions

World’s largest cricket website Cricinfo has shifted its global headquarters from London to Bangalore. Top Cricinfo officials including CEO Tom Gleeson have relocated to Bangalore. The group says it underscores the strategic importance it is placing on India as an important growth engine for the company. My sense is it may have more to do with the costs than cricket. The Bangalore HQ facility were inaugurated by Mark Getty, director Wisden Group, and co-founder and chairman Cricinfo, and John Brown, Chairman of the Wisden Group.
